COSTUME AND MAKE-UP AS VERITABLE TOOLS FOR CULTURAL PROMOTION AND TOURISM: A STUDY OF NIGERIAN HOME VIDEOS
Abstract
The study attempts to investigate the importance of costume and make up as viable tools for cultural and tourism promotion using Nigerian Home Videos as case study. It examines this topic by drawing copious evidence from the randomly selected Nigerian home videos watched. Most Nigerians takes home video as a means of entertainment. The study sets to enlighten the public on other possible functions of Nigerian home video which entails culture and tourism promotion but on the contrary, despite the fact that movies all over the world perform this function, the recent movies in Nigeria are mainly for entertainment and relaxation instead of propagating and promoting tourism and our cultural values. The study reveals that Nigerian home videos produced in the early and late 20th centuries were more cultural oriented than the recent ones. Since language and culture are closely related, the use of English in Nigerian home videos is an indication of direct deviant from our culture. In sum, the study establishes the fact that there are movie-induced tourists that are attracted to the settings, images and scenes of specific locations that are employed in a movie but our movies have failed to reflect images and scenes that are compelling and inviting. Instead of promoting our culture, the Nigerian home video is striving for popularity as well as competing with other movies thereby importing foreign culture of kissing, nudity and other vices to the country.
